Upper Year Mentoring Program

Participate in the UBC Faculty of Applied Science Upper Year Engineering Mentoring Program and explore the unique opportunity to network with industry professionals and gain valuable skills – such as interviewing and professional communication skills – while expanding your knowledge about engineering professions.
The Upper-Year Mentoring Program is open to Engineering undergraduate students in their upper years (2nd year or higher) and M.Eng students. Students will be matched with another student as well as with an engineer from industry or academia that works in a related discipline.

Network with industry professionals and fellow students as you expand your knowledge of the engineering profession and learn valuable personal and professional skills.

MENTORS

Volunteer as a mentor with the UBC Faculty of Applied Science Engineering Mentoring Program and share your knowledge and experience with students who are defining their career path, expanding their professional network, and developing important professional skills.

Mentee Expectations

Your involvement will span the academic year, from October through March, and will require about 15 hours of your time over the year.
You are expected to:

    • Attend two program events and an industry event of your choice
    • Meet with your group at least three times over the course of the academic year
    • Develop learning objectives with your mentor, review them periodically throughout the program, and complete a program-end assessment on your learning
    • Agree to and abide by the Mentoring Agreement and Code of Conduct

Mentor Expectations

Your involvement will span the length of the academic year, from October through March, with a total commitment of up to 12 hours
You are expected to:

      • Attend two program-wide events – Kick-Off & Closing Event
      • Attend an Industry Event or Site Tour with your group between December and March
      • Meet with your mentee(s) at least three times over the course of the academic year
      • Be available by phone and email you your mentees
      • Develop learning objectives with your student mentee(s) and review them periodically

How will I be selected for this program?

Students will be selected based on the quality of responses in their application.

What is the matching process between mentors and mentees?

We match mentors and mentees based on their career and extra-curricular interests.

What would I do with my mentor?

There are a variety of activities that you can do with your mentor. Some of them include: Informational interviews (learn more about their career journey, how they navigated university, how they got involved, how they got their first job, etc.) Company tours, networking events, mock interviews, resume reviews, etc. If you need help finding activities to do with your mentor, let us know and we’d be happy to help!

What are the backgrounds of mentors in this program?

Our mentors come from a wide range of engineering backgrounds and a variety of industries – anything from biomedical engineering to mining as well as anything from consulting, research, startup life, public sector, finance, etc.!

What kind of support will I receive during this program?

Students accepted into the program are required to attend a mandatory orientation session which will be a useful resource preparing students for the program. We also have career advising sessions and online resources.

What are some of the ways a mentor can help me?

Mentors can provide insight into industry, research/academia, as well as how the different engineering disciplines are applied in the workplace. They can also provide advice to get involved/ gain more experience, how to navigate university life as an engineering student, and the best ways to be get noticed when applying for jobs.

What is the mentor to mentee ratio?

The Upper year Mentoring Program is a tri-mentoring program so each student is paired with an additional student and a mentor.
